England's Youngest Ever International

Tuesday, May 30, 2006

All About Football on Yahoo

The youngest man ever to wear an England shirt in a full international made his first appearance tonight, Tuesday 30th May 2006; in a friendly match against Hungary, at Old Trafford.

At 17 years and 75 days young, Theo Walcott beat Wayne Rooney's record; although he didn't score.

England were leading (2:1) when Peter Crouch and Theo Walcott came on for Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard, just after the hour.

(0:0) at Half-Time

England could have been two goals up at half-time but thanks to the Hungarian goalkeeper, Kiraly Gabor, the score remained goaless after 45 minutes.

The first 40 minutes were rather boring but things livened up in the last five minutes of the first-half.

After Kiraly Gabor saved a Frank Lampard penalty, England seemed to up the tempo; as if they had just gone a goal down.

Two excellent crosses from David Beckham and England could have been two goals up. Kiraly saved a close range header from Michael Owen (just before the penalty that wasn't) and Joe Cole later headed onto the post.

Second Half

Owen Hargreaves replaced Gary Neville and within a minute, England went in front; Steven Gerrard heading the home side ahead from a David Beckham cross: England 1 - Hungary 0.

England Widen The Gap

Shortly afterwards, John Terry rocked the baby; after heading in from a David Beckam free-kick on the left.

Kiraly Gabor came off his line to punch the ball but the Chelsea defender nipped in with a slight touch to make it England 2 - Hungary 0.

Hungary Not Beaten Yet

With 55 minutes gone, Dardai brought Hungary back into the game with a terrific swerving shot from just outside of the England area; into Paul Robinson's top left corner.

England 2 - Hungary 1

Theo Walcott, who still hasn't played in the Premier League for Arsenal, gave us a glimpse of his pace in the 69th minute, as he broke down the right to cross low for Peter Crouch. Unfortunately (for the England substitutes), the cross was cut out.

John Terry made way for Sol Campbell but the game was underway before the Arsenal defender could even take up his position.

Within a minute of coming on, Sol Campbell went into the referee's book.

Peter Crouch Makes it Three

Joe Cole brought the ball forward and looked for the right pass. He seemed to be waiting too long but the grass cutting through-ball reached Peter Crouch, who tured his lanky frame almost elegantly and slotted the ball to the right of a diving Kiraly Gabor.

England 3 - Hungary 1

Three minutes of added time brought no further goals, so the holding exercise ends as England fans sing 'Football's Coming Home'.

Well, too early for that but at least there are no further injuries and Theo Walcott goes into the record books.

Final Score

England 3 - Hungary 1

USA Rocked By Morocco in Nashville

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

All About Football on Yahoo

I was looking forward to reading comments this morning from all our US Soccer fans about how stong their team is and how they would shock the world in Germany.

Instead, we get reality.

United States are not going to shock the world, we'll leave that to Australia.

So what did the 'Amis', as the Germans call Americans, get out of this little excercise in Nashville?

No More Rockin' Tonight

Match Summary

Things looked bad when US captain, Claudio Reyna hobbled off the field of play with a strained right hamstring in the 17th minute. But just how bad?

When Reyna was replaced by Pablo Mastroeni, he passed the captain's armband to Landon Donovan.

It was a further hour before the new American captain gave the watching public some sort of hope.

In the 82nd minute, Moroccan goalkeeper Tarek El Jarmouni could only parry Landon Donovan's 25-yard shot but Eddie Johnson skuffed the rebound, with an open net laughing at him.

USA were made to pay for this missed opportunity when Morocco substitute, Mohamed Madihi countered in the last minute of regular play, to easily lift Bouchaib El Moubarki's pass over a stranded Kasey Keller.

United States 0 - Morocco 1

Final Score

Starting Teams

United States:
18 Kasey Keller; 6 Steve Cherundolo, 12 Cory Gibbs, 22 Oguchi Onyewu, 23 Eddie Pope, 17 DaMarcus Beasley, 21 Landon Donovan, 5 John O'Brien, 10 Claudio Reyna, 20 Brian McBride, 16 Josh Wolff.

Croatia Cruise Into Gear

Tuesday, May 23, 2006

All About Football on Yahoo

Croatia took the lead in Vienna on their first real attack.... a low cross from Prso, on the left, to Ivan Klasnic who turned and fired Croatia in front; with only 11 minutes gone.

Austria 0 - Croatia 1

Drama as Austria equalise direct from a corner.

The ball is sent in high from the right corner flag by the Austrian captain, Andreas Ivanschitz.

Pletikosa jumps high and catches the ball ....but lands behind his line.

Austria 1 - Croatia 1

Klasnic Solo

Second goal for the Werder Bremen striker.....

Ivan Klasnic beats three players on the edge of the area, with some dazzling trickery, and cooly rounds the sprawling Austrian goalkeeper.

Austria 1 - Croatia 2

[Half Time]

Second Half

Klasnic has done his work for the day and doesn't start the second half. In his place comes number 18, Ivica Olic. The Croatian goalkeeper, totally at fault with the Austraian goal, is also substituted; Joseph Didulica taking his place.

A Stroll in the Park

Marko Babic makes it 3-1 and the Croatian fans light the flares.

A drive from outside the area gets a deflection and beats the diving Helge Payer, who just helps it into the net, with his hand at full stretch.

Austria 1 - Croatia 3

That's Why Austria Are Not At The World Cup

Bosco Balaban curls a free kick over the Austrian wall to make it 4-1 to Croatia, in the 69th minute.

A Different Class

I know this is only a friendly and Croatia are going to the World Cup and Austria are not..... but the class difference is substantial, as Croatia come close to making it five.

Austria 1 - Croatia 4

Final Score

Starting Teams

Austria:
1 Helge Payer; 5 Andreas Ibertsberger, 4 Paul Scharner, 6 Rene Aufhauser, 10 Andreas Ivanschitz, 7 Christoph Leitgeb, 11 Stefan Lexa, 8 Thomas Prager, 2 Joachim Standfest, 3 Martin Stranzl, 9 Marc Janko.

Hamburg was also the port of embarkation for millions of people from West and East Europe seeking a new life in the New World.

Park Hyatt Hamburg:
Bugenhagenstrasse 2, Hamburg.
What better chopice of hotel than the Hamburg Hyatt for the Americans. Located on the main shopping street, close to Hamburg station, the hotel is so discreet you could almost miss it if you're out window-shopping. You need to go up in a lift to the reception area and then the elegance hits you.

Hotels in Hamburg:
USA don't actually play in Hamburg but it's a very nice city to stay in all the same. Even in the knockout stages, to play the quarter-final game in Hamburg, Team USA would need to win their group and the 2nd Round match.

Ukraine start their World Cup training in Turkey before moving on to Abtwil, in Switzerland, from 3rd to 7th June.

Seminaris-SeeHotel:

Situated on the shores of Lake Templin, in the Pirschheide forest, the Seminaris-SeeHotel Potsdam was opened up in 1998. The large wellness area of the Hotel, 'Potsfit', includes a swimming pool, Finnish sauna, steam sauna, massage showers, solariums, warmth banks, fitness rotund and fitness equipment as well as massages and cosmetic studio. So at least the Ukrainians will be looking good.

Hotels in Potsdam:
With Ukraine playing their third match in Berlin, booking a hotel in Potsdam means that you'll be both close to the team and to the Olympic Stadium. The first game, in Leipzig, is also less than two hours away by train. Hamburg is closer to three hours.

Potsdam:
Potsdam's most popular sight is the Schloß Sanssouci palace located in the park to which it gives its name. However, there are far more than the former summer residency of Frederick the Great and the Sanssouci park to make your visit worthwhile. The Alexandrowka, the Holländisches Viertel (the Dutch quarter) and the Weaver's quarter - the historic sections of the city - provide the flair of a city steeped in European tradition.

Switzerland will train at the newly built Ußbachtal-Stadion.

Germany 2006 is Portugal's 4th appearance in the World Cup Finals.

Best World Cup Performance:

Portugal World Cup Preparations

Portugal have also chosen the former West German capital, Bonn, as their World Cup base and will use the same training facilities as Japan, at the Sportpark Nord.

Portugal Team Hotel
Dorint Venusberg:
AN Der Casselsruhe 1, Bonn.
A countryside hotel with personal service, the Dorint Sofitel Venusberg overlooks the town of Bonn, the Rhine and the Siebengebirge. Close to Kölner Flughafen (31km) yet set in something of a natural park, this location was considered the best choice for Portugal's 2006 World Cup campaign.

It was also used by Bayern Munich before the start of the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Hotels in Bonn:
Staying in Bonn is great for Portugal fans who want to be near their team but there will be more of a party atmosphere in nearby Cologne; especially as the Brazilian fans will be staying there.
